Aishwarya Rai was born on the 1st of November 1973 in Karnataka, Managlore, India to a former merchant navy officer Krishnaraj Rai and homemaker Vrinda Rai. She has one older brother who is also a merchant navy officer, Vrinda Rai.
Aishwarya attended the prestigious DG Ruparel College in India which is the number one science college in the country. Prior to that, she graduated from the Arya Vidya Mandir in Santacruz, Bombay, India. Then she also attended the Raheja College of Architecture in Bandara, Bombay, India.
Aishwarya wanted to become a doctor and had no dreams of becoming an actress when she was young. But things had their way of coming and now she has an average of two movie offers in a day. She started modeling while studying for Architecture at the Raheja College of Architecture. Then in 1994 she entered the Miss India contest and got second place for which she represented the country the Miss World which she eventually won the title and the Miss Photogenic Award. She worked as Miss World for one year in London and when she returned home the after her reign she was offered by the producers to appear in films.
Her first film appearance was in 1997 in the film Iruva, a Tamil language film by Mani Ratnam. Then in the film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya she played opposite Bobby Deol and was then introduced to Bollywood. Her next film was the 1998 Jeans by S. Shankar. It was a blockbuster hit and event he critics loved it. She was then to appear in many Bollywood films including in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1999 and in Taal also in that same year. She was again awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award South for Taal in 1999.
She was the catapulted to superstardom and appeared in many other films including in Devdas. The film was an international success and received a screening at the Cannes Film Festival. At the Cannes she was noticed by Hollywood and then was offered many projects. Then in 2004 she was among Time magazines’ 100 Most Influential People. This was followed by many guest appearances in Hollywood shows. More films both locally and internationally followed and at present she continues to appear in many Bollywood and Hollywood films.
Aside from acting, Aishwarya owns the production company Target where she is a very hands-on owner. She is also endorses Longines, Coke, Lux, Loreal and Nakshatra aside from modeling from Pepsi, Eye Bank Association of India, Colagate, Fuji, Palmolive, Rupa Sofline and many other products and companies.
